Can Alternative Medicine Prevent Gout?
Gout is a type of arthritis that is caused by the accumulation of uric acid in the body.
Crystals of uric acid can form in a joint - usually the big toe - and this can lead to intense pain and inflammation.
Uric acid is actually a breakdown product of a class of substances known as purines. It is therefore important for you to avoid foods that contain a high concentration of purines including red meat, seafood, beans, peas, lentils, yeast, herring, sardines, mackerel, anchovies and organ meats such as liver and kidney.
Sugar and alcohol should also be avoided as these are well known to increase the level of uric acid in the blood.
You should eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables which will help to alkalise the system and help neutralise the effect of the uric acid in the body.
Cherries, blueberries and other dark red-blue berries are rich in substances called proanthocyanidins which help to neutralise uric acid and reduce inflammation.
My advice would be to eat plenty of these when they are in season. In addition, you may benefit from taking a proanthocyanidin-rich supplement called Procydin. Take one capsule, two or three times a day. To order call BioCare on 0121 433 3727.
