SERIES 34Episode 22"I am a wildflower woman," says Dr Susan Davis, an academic and art historian who leads walks and curates experiences by connecting through art in nature. Dr Davis' love for flowers goes beyond their beauty, it's a deep dive into the history and stories that relate to wildflowers and the places where they grow. "I've been on a journey which has really been about getting to know Country, getting to know place, the land, the landscape, the flowers, the things that grow here," says Dr Davis, "and that's been through the stories of women who lived here in the past and the contributions they made. Now it's about passing on some of that knowledge that I've been fortunate to accumulate to others."
Kathleen McArthur Conservation Park is a significant place for Dr Davis who says, "it's my go to place for solace or inspiration." The park is named for a significant early activist, environmentalist and artist who was able to find a confident voice in the 1950s through painting, documenting and writing about the wildflowers and ecologies of the Sunshine Coast. Dr Davis says, "I think for many women in the 20th century, that was very difficult." With this confidence and alongside her friend, poet Judith Wright, they formed the Wildlife Preservation Society of Queensland and Wildlife Magazine. Now more than 60 years on, both initiatives still operate today and have resulted in the protection of many natural areas.
The fight to establish Cooloola as a National Park included printing over 100,000 postcards in a first-of-its-kind campaign. Dr Susan Davis says, "Kathleen McArthur was the brains behind that." Dr Davis has since connected with the artists' families to curate an exhibition highlighting their stories, art and work, embedding them into the experiences she facilitates here, and says, "It's because of the activism of these women that we have national parks and reserves that we can appreciate today." Another 100-acre reserve near Lake Currimundi protects what was once wildflower heathland. "This is the only patch that's left in this area. That's why it's really quite special for the Sunshine Coast," says Dr Davis, "It features both dry heath and wet heath, and also some woodlands on the edges. There's really quite a rich diversity of plant life to be found here… and to me it's almost like coming home… it's like greeting old friends."

The first verse of Judith Wright's poem expresses how Dr Susan Davis felt when starting this journey. "I'd read all these lists of names and had no pictures in my head of what they looked like," says Dr Davis and adds, "There are different ways that people can come to know plants and wildflowers, and one of them is through art and through drawing… It's a way of seeing. If you look carefully at a flower and if you're drawing it, you'll never forget that flower and you actually forge a relationship with it."
Through hosting walks in the reserves, Dr Davis meets a range of artists who focus on Australian wildflowers. Marni Stuart is a surface pattern designer who transfers her work onto fabrics, wallpaper, and other products. Marni says, "Every time I visit it's different, they're beautiful, they pop out with a different colour or a different shape… it's never-ending inspiration." Dr Davis says, the walks are about "encouraging people to find out about their own local areas, finding out about the plants, the ecologies that were here, and that might still be here, about appreciating those… Not everyone needs to be a botanist; you can find a love of nature through art, through poetry, through just going for a walk."
