Jaw Pain: Symptoms, Causes, and Treatment - Verywell Health

Image
Your jaw joints, or temporomandibular joints (TMJs), are found on either side of your head. A wide range of factors can affect the health of your jaw and cause jaw pain. While some types of jaw pain go away on their own, other types of pain need treatment to avoid more severe problems. Your jaw joints are located in front of each ear. TMJs operate like hinges that allow your lower jaw to perform three-dimensional movements. This allows your jaw to move up and down, forward and back, and side to side. Jaw pain can make it hard for you to chew, swallow, speak, make facial expressions, and breathe. In some cases, jaw pain resolves without treatment. This article discusses the symptoms and potential causes of jaw pain. It also covers risk factors and when to consult with your healthcare provider for t

Combined treatments for hypertension . . . and other stories - The BMJ

Image
Polypills for hypertension A systematic review gives a thumbs up to fixed dose combinations of antihypertensive drugs. Trials of low dose triple and quadruple combinations show that they are effective and safe as first line therapy for stage 2 hypertension (blood pressure >140/90 mm Hg). A strong advantage of combination treatment is that adherence to medication is high ( Heart doi:10.1136/heartjnl-2022-321496). Antibiotics and inflammatory bowel disease A registry study from Denmark finds a weak but consistent link between antibiotic prescription and a subsequent diagnosis of both ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. The strongest association was seen one to two years after antibiotic exposure in people …

Sepsis in a baby: Causes, symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment - Medical News Today

Image
Sepsis is a potentially life threatening condition in which the immune system overreacts to an infection. This overreaction causes damage to the body's organs and other tissues. Anyone with an infant or child showing symptoms of sepsis should take them to the emergency room. Without prompt medical treatment, the condition can lead to severe complications, and even death. In this article, we outline some of the symptoms and causes of sepsis and provide information on how doctors diagnose and treat the condition. We also discuss some of the factors that can increase a baby's risk of developing sepsis and offer general tips on prevention. Early detection and prompt treatment of sepsis reduce the risk of serious complications and death. Sepsis symptoms can vary, but they will include one or more of the following: Some of the above symptoms are common in babies and are not necessarily a sign of sepsis. However, if a baby appears sick and shows one or more of the above symptoms, it i

From the 3,603 records identified through the peer-reviewed and pre-print literature database searches, 315 full-text records were assessed for eligibility and 26 studies were included in this scoping review. Of the records identified from searching organizational or government databases in the grey literature search, 179 were assessed for eligibility and 10 grey literature publications were included in this scoping review (see PRISMA diagram in Fig. 1). In summary, 36 records were examined for this scoping review. Family warn parents over danger signs following sudden sepsis death of 'healthy' 13-year-old girl just days after falling ill with 'tummy bug' Lauren Menzies' parents are raising awareness and funds for research into sepsis By Danya Bazaraa For Mailonline Published: 13:19 BST, 22 March 2023 | Updated: 14:08 BST, 22 March 2023 The parents of a 13-year-old girl who died of sepsis just days after her mother took her to hospital with what she thought was nothing 'more serious than a bug' are raising awareness of the 'hidden killer' in memory of their 'beautiful' daughter.  Lauren Menzies, from Chorley in Lancashire, was on the sofa with flu - but less than 12 hours later she was fighting for her life in hospital. 'A fight that unfortunately she was to lose, less than six days later,' her devastated mother Sarah said.  Following thei

As Nirvana Luckraj, the chief medical officer of Healthdirect Australia explains, gastro is an overarching condition. "Gastroenteritis is a general term that refers to inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract. "[It] can be caused by a variety of factors including viral or bacterial infections, food poisoning, or it can be a reaction to certain medications, or even dietary changes." Symptoms of gastroenteritis can include: Nausea Vomiting Diarrhea Stomach cramps Fever Dr Luckraj says food poisoning, stomach bugs and other forms of gastro all have

The development of a machine learning algorithm for early detection ... - Nature.com

Abstract Access to Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) testing for people in low-resource settings has long been challenging due to the gold standard, enzyme immunoassay, being prohibitively expensive, and requiring specialised skills and facilities that are not readily available, particularly in remote and isolated laboratories. Routine pathology data in tandem with cutting-edge machine learning shows promising diagnostic potential. In this study, recursive partitioning ("trees") and Support Vector Machines (SVMs) were applied to interrogate patient dataset (n = 916) that comprised results for Hepatitis B Surface Antigen (HBsAg) and routine clinical chemistry and haematology blood tests. These algorithms were used to develop a predictive diagnostic model of HBV infection. Our SVM-based diagnostic model of infection (accuracy = 85.4%, sensitivity = 91%, specificity = 72.6%, precision = 88.2%, F1-score = 0.89, Area Under the Receiver Operating Curve, AUC = 0.90) proved to be highly accura
