WROC TV Rochester Draws Public, Health System Focus on Sepsis - HCA-NYS - Home Care Association of New York State

Situation Report | September 20, 2021

News features HCA, URMC, HCR Home Care and HCA Patient Shining Star Awardee

Drawing attention to the severity of sepsis for patients and the health care system, WROC News Rochester aired special coverage last week, focusing on this number one cost, number one killer and number one cause of hospital readmissions in the health care system.

HCA President Al Cardillo, University of Rochester Medical Center Medical Director Dr. Thomas Caprio, HCR Home Care Director for Clinical Innovation Christopher Chimenti and HCA 2021 Shining Star patient awardee and current project grant consultant, Jillian Thibeau, covered an array of sepsis facts and experience for WROC anchor Chrisitan Garzone.

The coverage underscored the severity of the illness, its impact on the health care system and individuals, and its significance in home care. The news video broadcast and Mr. Garzone's written synopsis can be accessed here.

HCA has provided links to resources, public outreach toolkits and other background for members in each of the last two editions of the Situation Report, and we continue to encourage all members to reach out to your communities, media outlets and partners as part of these Sepsis Awareness Month efforts. HCA has also been asked to present in the next week to the Washington State Home Care Association which is seeking adoption of the HCA sepsis tool throughout their home care system.

HCA strongly encourages all HCA home care, hospice and managed long term care members who may have yet to register for use and training for the HCA sepsis screening and intervention tool, to write to sepsistool@hcanys.org for details.
