Leach, Lasso, Lang: Viral moment sparks anti-candy corn movement - Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal

Image
STARKVILLE – SEC Network sideline reporter Alyssa Lang finished asking her third question during Saturday's on-field postgame interview with Mike Leach when she heard play-by-play broadcaster Taylor Zarzour and her producer in her earpiece. "You want to ask about the candy," they asked her about 10 seconds before Leach finished answering a presumed final question. Lang immediately decided yes, knowing Leach's reputation for providing iconic soundbites. "We talked about on the broadcast how you hate candy corn – what's your favorite Halloween candy?" she asked. It sparked a minute-long rant from Leach in which he shared his hatred for candy corn and gave free advertising for some of his favorite treats. "Gummy bears for sure," Leach said with a pondering look on his face. "Sour or regular?" Lang asked. "The Haribo. It's gotta ...

How to avoid the worst of a looming shortage of health care workers - STAT

Image
D uring the marathon of Covid-19, nurses and other health care workers have faced unprecedented levels of work stress as the world approaches two years of this global pandemic — and that stress isn't easing anytime soon. Health care systems today face a potentially disastrous retention crisis among nurses that will hit hard in the next five years. This crisis isn't exclusive to nurses — similar ones are on the horizon across all sectors of the health care workforce if health care organizations fail to respond to the stunning levels of burnout their employees are reporting. One measure of burnout, the Maslach Burnout Inventory, identifies several components that influence burnout, including emotional exhaustion and low personal accomplishment. In a review of studies done to assess the risk of burnout associated with the Covid-19 pandemic, 34% of nurses reported high emotional exhaustion, while 15% reported low personal accomplishment. This level of burnout can directly affect ...

What chickens can tell us about living with COVID-19 - Pursuit

Share selection to: As the world grapples with rolling out various vaccines for the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19, there are still many unknowns. For how long will a vaccine be effective? How effective will vaccines be against new strains? How optimal can we make future vaccines? There are questions also over what future research will reveal about the virus. How does it affect people differently? Do we fully understand the mechanisms of transmission? What about future coronaviruses? In the hunt for answers it would be wise to take a close look at chickens. The global poultry industry has learned to live with a deadly coronavirus. Picture: Getty Images The first coronavirus ever discovered (back in the 1930s) was the avian coronavirus known as Infectious Bronchitis Virus, or IBV. It is the most ubiquitous infectious agent of chickens. It causes a highly contagious respiratory disease with significant economic losses to the global poultry industry. Due to its ubiquitous and highl...

CDC adds depression, schizophrenia to list of underlying health conditions for severe COVID-19; eligible to get booster shot - KY3

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) - The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has added depression and schizophrenia to the list of underlying health conditions that would put someone at a higher risk for a severe COVID-19 diagnosis. With the CDC adding these mental health conditions to the list, those diagnosed are eligible to get the COVID-19 booster shot. Burrell Behavioral Health psychiatrist, Dr. Lorri Darrow says those mood disorders put people at a higher risk for getting severely ill from COVID-19. Dr. Darrow says it's not uncommon for people with mental illnesses to also have other medical conditions that go untreated. "Doing simple things that everybody else takes for granted," Dr. Darrow says. "For someone that is chronically depressed, even just getting to an appointment or having the courage to talk about their symptoms is very difficult." Dr. Darrow says chronic mental illness relates heavily to severe illness from COVID-19. Because of that, Dr. Darrow s...

Disentangling host–microbiota complexity through hologenomics - Nature.com

Image
Abstract Research on animal–microbiota interactions has become a central topic in biological sciences because of its relevance to basic eco-evolutionary processes and applied questions in agriculture and health. However, animal hosts and their associated microbial communities are still seldom studied in a systemic fashion. Hologenomics, the integrated study of the genetic features of a eukaryotic host alongside that of its associated microbes, is becoming a feasible — yet still underexploited — approach that overcomes this limitation. Acknowledging the biological and genetic properties of both hosts and microbes, along with the advantages and disadvantages of implemented techniques, is essential for designing optimal studies that enable some of the major questions in biology to be addressed.
